Finding your way around the terminal

What each part of the trading screen does, so you know where to look.

When you sign in you land in the terminal. This is your trading screen: the chart, the order panel, and the tabs tracking what you hold and what you have made or lost.

The main areas

  • Chart. The price chart for the contract you are looking at. You can place and manage trades directly on it as well as from the panel.

  • Order panel. Buy and Sell, your order type, how many contracts, and your brackets. A bracket is a take profit and a stop loss attached to a trade so your exit is set in advance.

  • Data tabs. Positions, Orders, History and Trades.

  • P&L in the top bar. Your profit and loss, live.

What the four data tabs mean

  • Positions — what you are holding right now.

  • Orders — what you have placed that has not filled yet.

  • History — everything that has happened on the account.

  • Trades — completed round trips, an entry matched with its exit.

The difference between Positions and Orders trips up most new traders. An order is an instruction that has not happened yet. A position is something you actually hold. An order becomes a position when it fills.

Open versus total P&L

Open P&L is the live result of everything you currently hold. It moves every time the price moves, and it is not yours until you close the trade.

Total P&L is where the account stands overall.

Watching Open P&L swing around is normal. It is the number that turns into real profit or loss the moment you close.

You always see the whole account

By default the data tabs show your entire account, across every contract. If you have a position open on one contract while charting another, it is still visible. You are never looking at a partial picture and cannot forget about a trade because it is on a different chart.

You can narrow a tab to just the contract you are charting, or switch between accounts, using two toggles covered in All accounts and all contracts toggles.
